The National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) has an online platform, NHIF Self Service, where members can create an account, update their profile, add dependants and beneficiaries, view their eCard, check contributions and give feedback. This guide explains how to register and use the system, based on the official NHIF Self Service user manual for members with an employee and employer relationship (employees, councillors and Members of Parliament).
- Website: selfservice.nhif.or.tz
- Who can register: individuals, service providers, employers and agents
- You will need: your membership number, phone number, email address, NIDA number (NIN) and a password
- NHIF Call Centre: 199 (toll free)
The NHIF Self Service Home Page
Open your browser and go to selfservice.nhif.or.tz. On the home page you can:
- Click Register (or the Register button under Individual) to register as an individual member.
- Register as a Service Provider, an Employer focal person/signatory or an Agent focal person/signatory using the Register button under each card.
- Click Login if you already have an account.
- Change the language with EN | SW.
- View certified facilities (Facility), NHIF products (Products) and services (Services), or send Feedback.
Step 1: Create Your Account
- Click Register and choose the account type (for example Individual Account) and member category (for example Employee).
- Enter your membership number, phone number and email address.
- Create a strong password and confirm it.
- Tick "I accept the Terms and Conditions" and click Save and Continue.
Step 2: Verify the OTP
After your account is created, the system sends a one-time password (OTP) to your phone number and opens the OTP page. Enter the code and click Validate. The code expires after a few minutes; if you do not receive it, click Resend.
Step 3: Finish and Rate the Process
When registration is complete you will see "Your account is ready". You can rate the registration process, leave a comment and choose where you heard about the service, then click Submit.
Step 4: Log In
Click Login on the home page, enter your username and password, and click Login. Your username can be your email address or your membership number. If you forget your password, use Forgot Password? on the login page.
Step 5: Update Your NIDA Number and Profile
- On first login you will be asked to update your profile. Enter your National Identification Number (NIN) and click Search. Your NIN is verified with NIDA using security questions.
- Complete your profile: birth certificate number, nationality, marital status, email, mobile number, region, district, ward, street and house number, then click Submit.
Step 6: Dashboard and Dependants
- Dashboard: shows total dependants, active beneficiaries, total visits, latest contribution and your last 10 visited facilities.
- View dependants: click Dependant to see the list of your dependants and their status.
- Add a dependant: click Add Dependant, select the relationship type (for example spouse or biological child), enter the required certificate numbers (such as birth certificate and marriage certificate numbers) and click Save Dependant. The system verifies the details with the relevant authority before adding the dependant.
According to NHIF, a dependant can be a spouse, a child (biological, adopted or step) under 21 years, biological parents, parents-in-law, or siblings (biological brother or sister) under 21 years.
Step 7: Beneficiaries and the NHIF eCard
- Make a dependant a beneficiary: open the Dependant list, find the dependant and click the "Add dependant to beneficiary" (+) icon. The system validates and adds them to your beneficiaries.
- View beneficiaries: click Beneficiaries, then Active or Inactive.
- View eCard: click View eCard next to a beneficiary to see their NHIF membership identity card.
- Deactivate a beneficiary: click Deactivate, select the reason (for example death), enter the required certificate number and click Submit. The system verifies the information before deactivating.
Note: NHIF covers a maximum of six (6) beneficiaries under the principal member, and a beneficiary can be changed after a period of three (3) years, except in case of death or divorce.
Step 8: Contributions, Facilities and Services
- Contributions: view your monthly contributions by employer, month and year. NHIF notes that an employer remits 6% of the employee's basic salary monthly, which can be shared equally between employer and employee or paid fully by the employer. If you see a difference, consult your employer.
- Visited facilities: under Services > Facilities, see the facilities you visited and the services received per visit.
- Accredited facilities: search and filter the list of all NHIF-certified health facilities.
- Eligible services: search the list of services covered by NHIF.
- Service approvals: under Services > Service Approvals, check approval requests and their status.
Step 9: Send Feedback
Click Feedback, then New Feedback. Choose your region, feedback type (complaint, suggestion, compliment or inquiry) and category, write a description, attach a file if needed, add a suggestion and click Submit.
