How to Use the TRA Taxpayer Portal: Login, Password Reset and OTP Help

The Taxpayer Portal is the online platform of the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) that lets individuals and businesses access and manage tax services without visiting a TRA office. This guide explains what you can do on the portal, how to log in, how to reset a forgotten password and how to solve common OTP problems, based on TRA's official FAQs.

  • Portal link: https://taxpayerportal.tra.go.tz (also available on www.tra.go.tz under "Online Services")
  • Username: your individual TIN
  • Who can log in: anyone with an individual TIN (an entity TIN cannot be used to log in)
  • TRA Call Centre (toll free): 0800 750 075 / 0800 780 078 / 0800 110 016

What Services Are Available on the Taxpayer Portal?

According to TRA, the portal offers:

  • TIN application
  • Filing of tax returns
  • Tax payments (payment receipts are issued automatically through the portal)
  • Application for a driving licence
  • Motor vehicle registration
  • Electronic Cargo Tracking System (ECTS)
  • Application for VFD and EFD Error Management Service
  • Registration for non-resident returns
  • Checking your tax compliance status

Who Can Access the Portal?

Any individual who has a TIN can use the portal. Your TIN is your username. You also need a new password, which you create by changing the original password the system gave you when you first registered for your TIN.

How to Log In to the Taxpayer Portal

  1. Open the portal at taxpayerportal.tra.go.tz or through the TRA website.
  2. Click "Login".
  3. Enter your username (your registered individual TIN) and your password.
  4. Click the "Login" button.

How to Reset a Forgotten Password

  1. Open the Taxpayer Portal through the TRA website or taxpayerportal.tra.go.tz.
  2. Click the "Login" link.
  3. Click the "Forgot Password" link.
  4. Enter the TIN whose password you want to reset and click "Submit".
  5. You will receive an OTP on your mobile phone.
  6. Enter the OTP, your new password, and confirm the new password.
  7. Submit to complete the reset, then log in with your new password.

Common Problems and How to Fix Them

"Provided the Tax Identification Number or Username does not exist"

This error appears when your TIN is inactive. To fix it, enter your National Identification Number (NIDA) and phone number in the sign-up window. If the problem continues, contact the TRA Call Centre (toll free): 0800 750 075 / 0800 780 078 / 0800 110 016.

I requested an OTP several times but did not receive it

This may be caused by a network problem, or the phone number receiving the OTP may be different from the number registered with your TIN. In that case, visit your nearest TRA office or call the toll-free numbers above.

"OTP has already been used"

Each OTP can be used only once. Click "Resend OTP" to get a new one. Never share your OTP with anyone.

Does an OTP expire?

Yes. An OTP expires within 3 to 5 minutes after you request it, so use it right away.

Filing Returns, Paying Tax and Getting Receipts

  • Tax returns: can be filed online through the Taxpayer Portal, or in person at the TRA office where you are registered.
  • Payments: taxes can be paid through mobile money, bank deposits or authorised payment centres. Accepted methods include electronic transfers, credit/debit cards, mobile payments and direct bank payments.
  • Receipts: issued automatically through the Taxpayer Portal, or collected from a TRA office after payment.
  • Compliance status: check it online on the portal or at your nearest TRA office.

Safety Tips

  • Always type the official address taxpayerportal.tra.go.tz yourself. Do not log in through links sent by strangers.
  • Keep your password private and, as TRA advises, never share your OTP with anyone.
  • Make sure the phone number registered with your TIN is still active, because OTPs are sent to it.
