Organization and project overview AB-Consult at the College of Economics and Business Studies (CoEBS), Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), in collaboration with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of Sussex, and OCP Tanzania, is conducting a cluster randomized controlled trial (RCT).
The study evaluates the impact of customized fertilizer recommendations (based on plot-level soil testing) on smallholder farmer investment, yields, profitability, and learning in selected villages in Tanzania.
Field activities include administering structured household and plot-level survey questionnaires, conducting follow-up data checks, and collecting data on fertilizer use, input markets, and agro-dealer stock availability.
Position summary We are seeking motivated, detail-oriented field enumerators to support face-to-face interviews with farmers and assist in high-quality data collection in accordance with research protocols.
Key responsibilities
- Participate in comprehensive training sessions on survey instruments, digital data collection tools (KoboToolbox), and survey protocols.
- Pre-test the survey instruments and incorporate feedback to improve research tools.
- Explain the research objectives, obtain informed consent, and ensure participant confidentiality.
- Guide respondents through structured household and plot-level surveys.
- Accurately record data using mobile tablets/smartphones.
- Maintain high-quality data collection standards to ensure consistency and accuracy.
- Provide daily reports to the Field Supervisor on progress and any challenges encountered.
- Assist in collecting participant feedback or suggestions when required.
Required qualifications and skills
- Minimum of a degree in Social Sciences, Economics, Agriculture, Statistics, or a related field from a recognized institution.
- A master’s degree is an advantage.
- At least 2 years of experience in collecting quantitative or qualitative data.
- Experience using tablets for data collection (KoboCollect or similar tools is highly preferred).
- In-depth understanding of community dynamics.
- Skilled in basic interviewing techniques with strong attention to detail.
- Willingness to travel and work in remote areas, including flexible hours (early mornings, weekends where necessary).

- High standards of integrity and honesty in recording and reporting data.
- Strong communication skills to clearly explain survey questions and collect information objectively and sensitively.

We are seeking motivated and experienced Field Supervisors to oversee enumerator teams, ensure high-quality data collection, and support the implementation of research protocols in the field. Supervisors will also conduct interviews when necessary and support additional surveys, including an agro-dealer survey.
Key responsibilities
- Participate in comprehensive training sessions on survey instruments, digital data collection tools (KoboToolbox), and research protocols.
- Supervise enumerator teams during fieldwork to ensure adherence to survey protocols and high standards of data quality.
- Conduct back-checks and spot-checks to verify data accuracy and completeness.
- Monitor enumerator performance using project performance dashboards and data quality checks, and provide constructive feedback.
- Identify and address data quality issues and support underperforming enumerators through coaching and guidance.
- Facilitate and oversee the agro-dealer survey, including coordination with agro-dealers and verification of collected data.
- Conduct household or plot-level interviews when required to support field teams.
- Provide daily field updates to the research team on progress, challenges, and data quality concerns.
- Ensure informed consent procedures and confidentiality standards are followed at all times.
- Support troubleshooting of field challenges and coordinate with the research team to ensure smooth data collection operations.
