
Trainer - Technical at Barrick
The Technical Trainer – Open Cast (OC) is responsible for delivering, assessing, and verifying technical, operational, and safety-related training programs for Open Cast Mining personnel. The role ensures employees and contractors develop and maintain the skills, knowledge, and competencies required to perform their duties safely, efficiently, and in accordance with operational, regulatory, and company standards.
The Technical Trainer works closely with the Training Coordinator –
OC, supervisors, and subject matter experts to support workforce
capability development, competency management, operator progression, and
operational excellence.
Training Delivery
Deliver high-quality technical and operational training programs to Open Cast employees and contractors.
• Conduct classroom, practical, field-based, and on-the-job training.
• Deliver new employee inductions and role-specific training.
• Facilitate equipment, operational, and safety training programs.
• Support implementation of learning pathways and development programs.
• Adapt training methods to meet workforce and operational needs.
• Promote safe work practices through effective training delivery.
Competency Assessment and Verification
Assess and verify employee competence against approved standards and requirements.
• Conduct competency assessments and workplace observations.
• Verify practical skills, knowledge, and operational capability.
• Collect and maintain assessment evidence.
• Recommend competency sign-off and operator authorizations.
• Participate in reassessments and refresher competency programs.
• Ensure assessments meet company and regulatory requirements.
Mobile Equipment Operator Development
Support development and progression of Open Cast equipment operators.
• Deliver operator training on mobile mining equipment.
• Conduct equipment familiarization and upgrade training.
• Coach trainee operators through structured development pathways.
• Support operator progression from trainee to competent operator status.
• Monitor operator performance and provide feedback to supervisors.
• Assist in developing operator capability improvement plans.
Compliance and Safety Training
Support compliance with regulatory and company training requirements.
• Deliver mandatory safety and critical risk training.
• Support implementation of operational standards and procedures.
• Ensure personnel understand site rules and safe work practices.
• Assist with permit-related and critical risk training requirements.
• Monitor completion of mandatory training activities.
• Support audit and compliance requirements as required.
Learning Resource Development
Support the development and continuous improvement of learning materials.
• Develop training presentations, guides, assessments, and practical exercises.
• Review and update learning materials to reflect operational changes.
• Assist in developing SOP-based training resources.
• Support digital learning and Damstra LMS initiatives
• Contribute to standardization of training content across departments.
• Work with subject matter experts to improve training effectiveness.
Training Records and Documentation
Maintain accurate learning and competency documentation.
• Complete training attendance and assessment records.
• Submit assessment evidence and competency documentation.
• Maintain accurate learner progress records.
• Ensure training documentation is completed within required timelines.
• Support data accuracy within Damstra and other learning systems.
• Maintain audit-ready training records.
Coaching and Workforce Capability Development
Provide ongoing coaching and support to employees and supervisors.
• Coach operators in workplace applications and best practices.
• Provide one-on-one support to trainees and developing operators.
• Assist supervisors in identifying competency gaps.
• Support workforce capability improvement initiatives.
• Encourage continuous learning and development.
• Promote operational excellence through workforce skills development.
Continuous Improvement
Contribute to the ongoing improvement of training systems and workforce capability.
• Identify opportunities to improve training effectiveness.
• Participate in training reviews, audits, and improvement initiatives.

Roles and Responsibilities in Health and Safety

Responsibilities

Ensure compliance with all regulatory and Barrick health, safety and environmental policies and procedures.

Qualification requirements

Degree/Diploma in Electronics and Electrical Engineering/Instrumentation or Industrial Automation.

Instrumentation Trade Test Certificates.
Experience and competencies needed.

2 Years – Post Trade Test Experience.

Knowledge of diagnostics SCADA system.

Basic of Allen Bradley PLC maintenance and Installation.

Basic of Siemens PLCs maintenance and Installation.
-
Industrial Field Instrumentation Fault Finding.

Ethernet Networks (wired and wireless).
-
Process Control Systems.
-
VSD and Soft Starters.
-
Plant maintenance experience on Mills, crushers, conveyors, compressors, pumps, CIL tanks etc.

Working knowledge of safety standards of equipment.

Previous maintenance experience in industrialized plant is beneficial.
