Your A-Level Combination Decides Your Future: A Clear Guide for Tanzanian Students
The subjects you choose in Form 5 are the key to which university degree you can study. This guide shows all the main ACSEE combinations, the degree programmes they lead to, and the universities in Tanzania that offer them.
🎓 How the Tanzania Education System Works
In Form 5 and 6, every student studies 3 main subjects (Principal Subjects) plus General Studies, which is compulsory for all students. To get into university, TCU requires at least 2 Principal Passes (a grade of D or better in 2 subjects).
"The combination you choose today decides which degree you can study at university — and which career you will build tomorrow. Choose with your head, not with the crowd."
Every year, thousands of Tanzanian students finish Form Four and face one of the biggest decisions of their lives: which combination to study in Form Five? Many students choose without good information — some follow their friends, others pick randomly. This guide helps you decide based on real facts from TCU and NECTA.
Science Combinations
Science combinations open the door to medicine, engineering, agriculture, and scientific research. These are the most competitive combinations in Tanzania — especially for Medicine (MD) and Engineering degrees.

⚠️ Important: Requirements for Medical Doctor (MD)
To study Medicine (Doctor of Medicine) in Tanzania, you need PCB with at least Physics-D, Chemistry-C, Biology-C — this equals a minimum of 8 points, which means Division I or a strong Division II. Universities that offer Medicine include MUHAS, UDSM-Mbeya Campus, CUHAS, KCMC, and Bugando. If you do not meet these grades, you cannot be selected for MD — but you can still qualify for many other health programmes like Pharmacy or Nursing.
Agriculture & Health Combinations
CBG, CBA, and CBN are combinations designed for students interested in the environment, farming, food, and some health programmes. These open good opportunities at universities like SUA Morogoro and MUHAS.

Arts & Language Combinations
Arts combinations are often looked down upon, but they are very important. They open doors to law, journalism, diplomacy, teaching, and government work. Many employers value students from arts backgrounds because they can write well, think clearly, and communicate with people.

How ACSEE Results Are Graded
NECTA gives results for your Principal Subjects using a Division system. Each university sets its own entry requirements, but TCU requires a minimum of 2 Principal Passes (at least a grade D in 2 subjects) for most programmes. The table below explains what each division means.
| Division | Total Points (3 subjects) | What it means | University opportunities |
|---|---|---|---|
| Division I | 3 – 9 points | Excellent results | Any university in Tanzania — MD, Engineering, Law, and more |
| Division II | 10 – 12 points | Very good results | Most degree programmes — check each course's requirements |
| Division III | 13 – 17 points | Average results | Many arts and business degrees; some diploma routes |
| Division IV | 18 – 19 points | Below average | Diploma or certificate programmes; consider retaking |
| Fail (F) | 20+ points | Did not pass | Must retake the examination |
Note: For science courses like Medicine, universities look closely at the grade in each individual subject — not just the Division. For example, MUHAS checks your exact grades in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology separately.
How to Choose the Right Combination
Choosing a combination is not something to do quickly or because your friends did it. Here are four simple questions to help you decide:
🎯 What job do you want?
Start with your goal. Want to be a doctor? Choose PCB. An engineer? Choose PCM. An accountant? Choose ECA. Work backwards from the job to the degree to the combination.
📊 Which subjects are you good at?
A-Level is hard work. Choose subjects you enjoy and understand well — not just subjects that sound impressive. Good grades come from genuine interest and effort.
🏫 What does your target university require?
Every university has different entry requirements. Read the official TCU Guidebook at tcu.go.tz to check the exact requirements for the degree you want — do not rely only on what other people tell you.
💡 Not sure yet? Keep options open.
If you do not know your direction yet, Mathematics is the most flexible subject — it appears in PCM, EGM, and PGM. EGM and HGE also lead to many different degree programmes if you are still undecided.
💰 Student Loans — HESLB
Students who are selected to join university have the right to apply for a loan from the Higher Education Students' Loans Board (HESLB). The loan covers tuition fees, accommodation, and a living allowance. You apply online at heslb.go.tz after you receive your selection letter from TCU. The amount you get depends on your family's income level.
Important: General Studies is Compulsory
Every Form 5 and Form 6 student in Tanzania must study General Studies (GS). It is a compulsory subject for all ACSEE students. Your GS grade adds to your total points and can help or hurt your chances of getting into university. Do not ignore General Studies — it matters more than many students think.
Your Next Steps
The combination you choose will be with you for two full years of study and will decide which university door opens for you. But the best combination is not necessarily the most impressive-sounding one — it is the one you can study hard in, perform well in, and that leads toward a goal you actually care about.
Always read the official TCU Guidebook for the current year at tcu.go.tz, because entry requirements change every academic year. Talk to your teachers, school careers officers, and if possible, current university students. Then make your choice with confidence.
